I definitely agree that changes need to start at the top, particularly in the areas of food supply. We simply have too much access to nutrient-devoid foods that are engineered to make us over-consume.

But change is never easy and it will take health professionals of all kinds to start effecting change. My feeling is that waiting for the government to act will mean a good 20 years have passed before anything gets done.

Great post GT!
I detest BMI. In 2008, Romero-Corral A. et al. published a paper which found that with individuals deemed obese by the WHO reference standard of 25% body fat, only 36% of obese individuals had a BMI over 30! It turns out that BMI isn't even appropriate for fatties!

Like any crisis, the obesity epidemic won't be solved through wishy washy initiatives. Case in point; every Canadian can recite the "Body Break" theme song yet 23% of us are still obese. Bold and radical action is needed in order to really change people's habits. I think government legislation needs to play a big role in this. However, I don't think that mandatory physical education is the way to go.

@ Elisha - Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately, I am completely unfamiliar with the inner workings of Ubuntu. What kind of layout problems are manifesting themselves?

Great article. There's a lot of good information here, though I did want to let you know something - I am running Ubuntu with the current beta of Firefox, and the layout of your blog is kind of bizarre for me. I can read the articles, but the navigation doesn't work so good.

Jonah,

I got a lot of ideas from guys like Darren Rowse at ProBlogger.net, John Chow and Yaro Starak at Entrepreneurs Journey. Most of them have ebooks and newsletters you can get for free that contain tons of valuable info. I'd suggest starting their, they also have great websites with tons of other useful tips.

Hope those help, if I can be of any further help don't hesitate to drop me a line.
